Since the inception of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), the UBA cell at IISER Thiruvananthapuram campus has been actively conducting and participating in the development process of the villages adopted by the Institute. The active participation of the student volunteers and other stakeholders helped the cell to bring a threshold to the development activities in the villages. The institute has conducted various programs in villages under the banner of UBA. For the effective implementation of the activities, we have followed the Human Centred Design (H.C.D) method, because it can help to increase the speed and effectiveness of creating innovative and adaptable solutions. By using H.C.D method, we could examine the basic needs of the community through active field visits and empathise with the people and the prototype are made accordingly.
We are implementing every activities under the banner of our UBA cell called CARE (Collective Action for Rural Empowerment). Under CARE we have categorised our development activities in to different focus areas
CARE has widened its focus towards different socio-economic environmental domains to keep it sustained for the future generations. Being a Regional Coordinating Institute we have kept active contact with the Participating Institutions to coordinate and channelize the development process effectively. At the same time CARE has a dedicated group to conduct and provide awareness on menstrual hygiene and gender sensitisation in the adopted villages. Over the last one year, CARE has tried to augment the quality of education, sanitation, health and hygiene and drinking water facilities in the adopted villages. CARE ensured the expansion and sustainability of the programs in future by having an alignment with the government and non-government organisations.
CARE- MARG DARSHAN
Marg Darshan was a successful program initiated by the institute during the last academic year. The program basically focused on the students from the community. Through Marg Darshan we could provide tuition and coaching classes for the students appearing for NTSE, LSS and USS examinations. Some of the students achieved high ranks in the examinations and that was an inspiration for us to continue the program with new innovative and advanced teaching methods and strategies in future.
Mission Swasthya is majorly focusing on Health and WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene). As an initial step to the mission the institute has conducted few medical camps in the villages, especially in areas where there is a sizable tribal community, to counter the most common and prevalent health issues in the villages.
As part of the future venture, we are planning to extend the number of activities in health and WASH area. It is planning to conduct a survey on health and WASH to understand the perspective of the community. The results of the survey would lead to find the common issues and resolving it. Conducting active sessions, workshops and training programs on the stated issues are being planned.
