North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), one of the Regional Coordinating Institutes of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), organized one-day “Orientation of Participating Institutes to Initiate work in Adopted Village Clusters” on 22 February 2020 in Itanagar. A total of 52 participants from different Participating Institutes (PIs) of Arunachal Pradesh attended the programme.

Inauguration of Orientation Workshop

The main theme of the event was to involve the reputed higher educational institutions (Technical/ nontechnical/ public/ private) of the region with the vision of indigenous development of self-sufficient and sustainable village clusters. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. H. S. Yadav (Director, NERIST) as Chief Guest. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized the role of farmers in nation-building.

Prof. Ajay Saini (CRDT, IIT Delhi) and Shri Tabang Bodung (ADC, Papum Pare, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh) graced the programme as Guest of Honours. Prof. P. Lingfa (Regional Coordinator, UBA-NERIST Cell) welcomed the delegates and delivered the keynote address. He discussed how higher education institutions can play an important role in sustainable development of rural India through a programme like Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.

Prof. Ajay Saini delivered lectures through audio-visual mode on a case study of the development of Nicobar Island after it was devastated by the tsunami in 2004 and participatory rural appraisal. He also explained the role of Subject Expert Groups (SEGs) in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.

Prof. P. Lingfa briefed on the role of UBA for nation-building through the development or advancement of villages. Dr. T. Patel explained human safety in the operation of agricultural tools feasible within the region.

The feedback of the participants was taken during the workshop and various queries were cleared through video conferencing with the expert team of UBA National Coordinating Institute, IIT Delhi.

After the orientation workshop, laboratories of various NERIST departments including Biodiesel, Farm Machinery, Farm Power, Ergonomics were visited by the guests. Tools, equipment and machines were perceived and demonstration of a few of them was conducted.

The whole programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.
