Independence Day Celebrations Outside the College
• Mirpur is a Christian-dominated, very small area around the villages of Suklalpur and Betkundu. The Christian communities are mainly the descendants of the Portuguese whose parent generations migrated from Goa several centuries ago at the personal discretion of the Jaminders of Mahishadal, who were known as Rajas of Mahishadal.
• Mirpur is an adopted area of Mahishadal Girls’ College for the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan programme.
• Hence, the Independence Day celebration this year was jointly organised by the villagers of Mirpur and the Department of Anthropology of Mahishadal Girls’ College. Dr Suman Kalyan Samanta, HOD, Anthropology and Coordinator, Post Graduate Department of Social Work Department, hoisted the Indian National Flag. More than 150 villagers actively participated in this programme.
