Workshop on Organic Farming
The workshop on organic farming was organised under the aegis of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan by Panjab University, Chandigarh in village Soonk (i.e. one of the five villages adopted by Panjab University) on August 13, 2026 at 12:00pm. The programme was felicitated by Prof Satvinderpal Kaur, Dr. Bharti Garg, Dr. Sumandeep Kaur and Dr. Vinod Kumar Chaudhary. The workshop was supported by Sarpanch i.e. head of village, Principal of primary school and other dignitaries in the village.
The key speaker Shri Chamkaur Singh is a farmer himself who has inspired many at the ground level in Punjab to guide farmers with experience and wisdom. The workshop was attended by young and old farmers. The resource person discussed the importance of pulse farming for enhancing nitrogen content of soil, creating a new ecosystem where the role of ‘pind’ (meaning village) is crucial. Farming as a career where Artificial Intelligence is taking up jobs, the type of crops with maximum output and trend like Moringa, Amla, Mulberry, Ginger, Papaya, etc. were discussed. The concept of cooperative societies and financial help for prospective farmers were initiated that caught the attention of young participants. Other topics for discussion included carbon content in soil, water versus moisture retention and the relation between use of urea and drug addiction among youth. Biochar as an organic manure for crops that involves converting wood into coal that enhances bacteria in soil and importance of naturopathy by organic farming were also highlighted. Many questions were asked regarding problems about animals trespassing farmlands to which solar fencing through collective action was suggested as a possible solution. Other key issues involved insurance of crops, Kisan credit card, soil health check and parameters. Adequate solutions were provided for the same while emphasising upon collaboration among village and university as important. The workshop ended on a cordial note with vote of thanks and felicitation of key speakers, Sarpanch, Principal of Primary School with mementos and plants as a token of gratitude.
