IGEN GREEN DAY – 2024

On October 22 / 2024 , Sri Sairam Engineering College's UBA team celebrated IGEN Green Day with the mission of motivating people to select their favorite Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and take green actions and peace pledges.

As part of this initiative, the team raised awareness in the villages of Varadharajapuram, Naduveerapattu, Somangalam, Poonthandalam, and Nandambakkam. Over 250 yellow bags were distributed to villagers, highlighting the dangers of plastic use and promoting eco-friendly alternatives. The event was led by a group of five core members, supported by 125 volunteers, and successfully accomplished its goal of spreading environmental awareness.

Sairam UBA organized the Green Day Pledge 2024 on October 22, along with the SDG Pledge, in the villages of Somangalam, Poonthandalam, Varadharajaputam, Nadampakkam, and Naduveerapattu Grama Panchayats. The event aimed to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and promote the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the local communities.

The event saw active participation from the President, Vice President, and ward members of the panchayats, as well as a large number of village residents. Around 150 UBA volunteers joined forces with community members, making the event a collective success. Approximately 100 people from each village took part in the activities, demonstrating the strong interest and commitment of the local population towards environmental issues.

Throughout the event, we distributed awareness handouts to the public, highlighting the urgent need to reduce the use of plastic bags. Volunteers emphasized how single-use plastics contribute to environmental pollution and harm local ecosystems. To further encourage sustainable practices, we distributed 500 cloth bags among the villages. These cloth bags were provided as an alternative to plastic, helping residents adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives.
